This 1972 Mercury Cougar XR-7 convertible was first delivered to Frank J. Sanders Lincoln Mercury of Fresno, California, and was acquired by the seller from the original owning family in 2014. The car is powered by a 351ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and is finished in white with a power-operated white soft top over burgundy leather upholstery. Equipment includes a power-operated driver’s seat, an aftermarket stereo, power windows and locks, power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, and 14″ wheels with bright covers. An Edelbrock 600-cfm four-barrel carburetor, an aluminum intake manifold, electronic ignition, an aftermarket alternator, and a replacement battery, starter motor, and valve cover gaskets were fitted under current ownership. This Cougar is now offered with a window sticker, an owner’s manual, service records, purchase documents, removed parts, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The exterior was refinished in white with red pinstripes around 2021. Equipment includes a power-operated white soft top, color-keyed contoured racing mirrors, chrome bumpers, and sequential taillights. A dent in the rear bumper is shown in the gallery.

Steel 14″ wheels with bright covers are mounted with Hankook Optimo H724 whitewall tires. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The front Hi-Back bucket seats and rear bench are upholstered in burgundy leather. Options include a power-operated driver’s seat, power windows and locks, and a center console. An aftermarket stereo was fitted. The air conditioning compressor was removed and the analog clock is inoperative.

The three-spoke steering wheel is mounted on a tilting column and fronts a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges indicating fuel level and coolant temperature. Amperage and oil pressure gauges are housed above the radio. LED instrument lights were added under current ownership. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 11k miles, and the seller reports adding approximately 16k miles under current ownership. True mileage is unknown.

The 351ci Cleveland V8 was factory equipped with a two-barrel carburetor, and an Edelbrock 600-cfm four-barrel carburetor with an electric choke, an aluminum intake manifold, electronic ignition, and an aftermarket alternator were fitted under current ownership. The battery, starter motor, and valve cover gaskets are said to have been replaced in preparation for the sale.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission.

The window sticker shows initial delivery to Frank J Sanders Company of Fresno, California, and lists factory options and a total price of $5,110.33. Manufacturer’s literature, the initial sales invoice, a warranty card, past registration slips, partial service records, and removed parts are included in the sale.
