This 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 convertible and is said to have been acquired by the current owner’s family in the 1980s. The car is finished in red over black vinyl and powered by a 351ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes 15″ Scott Drake wheels, a power-operated black soft top, power-assisted steering and brakes, power windows, power-adjustable front seats, cherry woodgrain interior trim, and an AM/FM radio. This Cougar XR-7 is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with a Marti report and clean Texas title in the owner’s name.

The Cougar’s design was altered for the 1973 model year with changes that included a revised chrome front bumper and restyled lenses for the sequential taillights. This example was factory-finished in Bright Red and was refinished in red in the early 1990s. It is equipped with a power-operated black soft top with replacement fabric. Paint chips are shown up close in the gallery.

The 15″ Scott Drake wheels are mounted with 235/70 Hankook Kinergy ST tires showing 2021 date codes. The car is equipped with power-assisted steering and brakes.

The black interior is said to have been partially refurbished in the 1990s. Features include high-back front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in leather with embossed Cougar insignias on the backrests. Additional appointments include power windows, power-adjustable front seats, center console storage, and an AM/FM radio. There are tears in the roof liner and the air conditioner does not work.

Cherry woodgrain trim extends from the three-spoke Rim-Blow steering wheel to the dashboard, which houses a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and readouts for fuel level, engine temperature, amperage, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 97k miles, approximately 10k of which were added during current ownership. The horn does not work.

The 351ci V8 is equipped with a four-barrel carburetor. There is a leak from one of the valve covers.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a C6 three-speed automatic transmission. Corrosion is present on underbody components and leaks are noted from the transmission and rear end.

The Deluxe Marti Report shows initial delivery to Roy Butler Inc. of Austin, Texas, and lists factory colors, options, and production statistics.
