This 1971 MG Midget Mk III was acquired by the seller in 2023 as a disassembled project, and a subsequent refurbishment involved repainting the exterior in yellow, retrimming the black vinyl interior, rebuilding the 1,275cc inline-four and the four-speed manual transmission, and replacing the black convertible top, fuel tank, radiator, clutch, suspension parts, and the hydraulic and brake lines. The car also has 13″ wire-spoke wheels, front disc brakes, chrome bumpers, and a heater. This Midget is now offered with refurbishment photos and records, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, and a Maryland title in the seller’s name.
Finished from the factory in Glacier White, the car was stripped to bare metal and painted in chartreuse yellow during the aforementioned refurbishment. The black convertible top was replaced, and other equipment includes black rocker-panel accents, a single side mirror, triple windshield wipers, side-marker and reverse lights, a chrome front bumper, and rear bumper overriders.
Wire-spoke 13″ knock-off wheels are mounted with 155/80 Cooper Trendsetter SE radial tires, and braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The brakes, hydraulics, and suspension parts are said to have been replaced during the refurbishment, as were the tires.
The seating surfaces are trimmed in black vinyl, and interior appointments include sun visors, a cabin heater, lap belts, a map light, and a radio blanking plate. The interior was refreshed during the refurbishment.
Smiths instrumentation consists of a 100-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 50k miles, approximately 200 of which were added by the seller.
The 1,275cc inline-four featured dual SU downdraft carburetors from the factory for a rating of 62 horsepower and 72 lb-ft of torque. The engine reportedly was rebuilt during the refurbishment, and the radiator and the fuel tank were replaced.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. The transmission was rebuilt under current ownership, and the clutch was replaced.
Refurbishment photos and records are pictured in the gallery below.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate indicates that the vehicle was dispatched to the United States on January 18, 1971. The document also details factory-installed colors and options.
The Maryland title notes “Not Actual Mileage” under the odometer section.
