This 1964 Mercedes-Benz 230SL was repainted red and fitted with a 2.8L inline-six, a replacement four-speed automatic transmission, and four-wheel disc brakes in the 1990s. Additional equipment includes tan MB-Tex upholstery, a black convertible top, 14″ steel wheels with painted covers, driving lights, Euro-spec headlights, a CD stereo, and a heater. The seller purchased the car in 2018 and a replacement radiator was installed in 2021. This W113 SL is now offered in New Mexico with the owner’s manual and a clean Wisconsin title in the names of the seller and their spouse.
The W113 SL was designed by Friedrich Geiger, Béla Barényi, and Paul Bracq and was introduced to the public at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. This example was finished from the factory in Blue Metallic and was repainted red in the 1990s. Features include a black soft top, Hella driving lights, and European-specification headlights. The seller notes tears at the base of the soft top and areas of wear on the soft top decklid.
The 14″ steel wheels feature hubcaps with painted centers and chrome trim rings, and they are mounted with 205/70 Michelin Defender tires. Braking is provided by power-assisted discs at each corner.
The cabin houses bucket seats upholstered in tan MB-Tex that extends to the door panels. Interior appointments include a Sony CD stereo with four speakers, a floor-mounted gear shifter, and a heater. Some wood trim was replaced and an analog clock was installed in 2018, while three-point seatbelts were added in 2021.
The two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline as well as gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer was reportedly reset to zero at the time of the engine installation and shows 13k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 2.8 liter inline six and replacement four-speed automatic transmission were installed in the late 1990s. A stainless-steel exhaust system has been fitted. The radiator was replaced in 2021 and a replacement battery installed in 2024.
