This 1969 Volkswagen Beetle convertible was acquired new by the current owner’s parents in September 1969 from Hawthorne Corporation in Richmond, Virginia, and was inherited by the current owner in 2014. The car is finished in red with a black convertible soft top over black leatherette upholstery, and power is provided by a rebuilt 1.5-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Additional equipment includes 15″ steel wheels, chrome-finished fender rock guards, dual-side mirrors, VDO instrumentation, and an Optimus cassette stereo. This Beetle is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of its current owner with an owner’s manual, partial service records, a black vinyl top boot, and a clean South Carolina title in the current owner’s name.

The car is finished in red and was repainted under prior ownership. Details include a replacement black convertible soft top, chrome-finished fender rock guards, and dual side mirrors. The windshield washer fluid sprayers do not work, the body seals are in need of replacement, and various dents, dings, and other blemishes are noted throughout the body.

Black-finished 15″ steel wheels wear polished VW-stamped hubcaps and are mounted with 165-series Michelin XZX tires that need to be replaced. Braking is provided by drums at all four corners. The seller states that various metal components on the front suspension are cracked and broken. The front end should be inspected and repaired before the car is driven.

The front bucket seats and rear bench are upholstered in black leatherette. An Optimus AM/FM/cassette stereo has been retrofitted, and a heater, door map pockets, a passenger grab handle, and a locking glove compartment are further elements. Rust is noted on the driver’s floorboard, and wear is evident throughout the cabin.

The two-spoke steering wheel fronts a VDO 90-mph speedometer with an inset fuel level gauge. The horn and turn signals do not work. The five-digit odometer shows 49k miles and is said to have rolled over numerous times. Total mileage is unknown.

The 1.5-liter flat-four was reportedly rebuilt in 1990 and features a Solex downdraft carburetor for a factory rating of 53 horsepower. Oil leaks and rust on the exhaust system are noted.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. Additional underside images are viewable in the gallery below.
