This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is said to have been purchased by the seller’s grandfather in the early 1970s and it was acquired by the seller in 1994. The car is powered by a 2.8-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and is finished in Silver Gray Metallic over black leather. Equipment includes a black convertible top, a removable hardtop, power steering, 14″ steel wheels with painted hubcaps, an AM/FM radio, and air conditioning. This W113 SL is now offered with the owner’s manual, a car cover, a hard top stand, a hard top cover, a tonneau cover, two keys, tools, and a clean Minnesota title in the seller’s name.
The W113 SL was designed by Friedrich Geiger, Béla Barényi, and Paul Bracq and was introduced to the public at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. This example is finished in Silver Gray Metallic (180) and features a black soft top, a removable hardtop, a retractable antenna, a driver-side mirror, and US-specification headlights. The left rear bumper is bent and the adjacent bodywork is dented. The seller notes a hole in the soft top cover, and blemishes in the finish are shown up close in the gallery.
The 14″ steel wheels feature hubcaps with painted centers and are mounted with Michelin tires measuring 185-14. A spare is located in the trunk. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is provided by power-assisted four-wheel discs.
The cabin houses bucket seats upholstered in black leather that extends to the door panels. Interior appointments include a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio, an analog clock, and a floor-mounted gear shifter. The air conditioning has not been tested, and a tear is present on the driver’s seat.
The two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames a 140-mph speedometer and an inoperative tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline as well as gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 23k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership.
The 2.8-liter M130 inline-six was factory equipped with Bosch fuel injection and was rated at 195 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque when new. The battery was replaced in 2020 and the fuel pump and spark plugs were replaced in October 2023, per the seller.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission.
