This 1978 Volkswagen Super Beetle convertible was refurbished circa 2016 and acquired by the current owner in 2019. It is powered by a replacement air-cooled 2,110cc flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle that has reportedly been modified with a “Freeway Flyer” gearset. The body was resprayed in Mars Red and is equipped with a black convertible soft top, Karmann body tags, and chrome impact bumpers with rub strips, while the interior has been retrimmed in black vinyl and features a deleted radio and front headrests. Additional details include 15″ Fuchs-style wheels, drum brakes, dual Kadron-style carburetors, electronic ignition, and an aftermarket exhaust system. This 1303 Super Beetle is now offered on dealer consignment with a clean Pennsylvania title.
The car left the factory finished in Mars Red (L31B) and received a repaint approximately eight years ago. Exterior details include a black convertible soft top, dual side-view mirrors, polished beltline trim, quarter vent windows, Karmann body tags affixed to the front quarter panels, and chrome impact bumpers with rub strips. The rear quarter windows are out of adjustment.
Fuchs-style 15″ wheels are mounted with 195/65 JK Tyre Star Trak tires. The car was factory equipped with a MacPherson strut and coil spring front suspension in place of the standard Beetle’s torsion bar setup. Stopping power is provided by drum brakes at all four corners.
Inside, the headrests for the front bucket seats have been deleted the seating surfaces were retrimmed in black basketweave pattern upholstery. Additional details include a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpeting as well as a lockable glove compartment, front shoulder belts, rear lap belts, and black rubber floor lining. A block-off panel was installed in place of the radio, though speakers are still mounted in the front door panels.
The four-spoke steering wheel features a Wolfsburg crest center cap and fronts a 100-mph VDO speedometer with an inset fuel-level gauge. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 53k miles, approximately 2k of which have been added under current ownership. True mileage is unknown.
