304-Powered 1954 Kaiser Darrin

This 1954 Kaiser Darrin is #357 of 435 production examples built for a single model year. It is said to have remained with a single owner from 1967 to 2024 and underwent a multi-year refurbishment in the 2000s that included the installation of a 304ci AMC V8 and a three-speed automatic transmission as well as a throttle body fuel injection system, electronic ignition, a dual exhaust system, power steering, power-assisted disc brakes, cruise control, and a late-model Chrysler-sourced CD player. The car is finished in yellow over matching upholstery, and additional features include chrome wire wheels, a three-position soft top, sliding doors that retract into the body, and plexiglass wind wings. This Kaiser Darrin was purchased by the selling dealer in 2024, and it is now offered with literature, refurbishment photos, and a clean Massachusetts title.

The Darrin roadster was designed by California-based coachbuilder Howard “Dutch” Darrin and was among the first American production cars to feature fiberglass bodywork. This example was delivered from the factory in Yellow Satin (157) and was repainted in its factory color during the 2000s refurbishment. Styling includes sliding doors that retract into the body as well as a chrome grille, bumpers with overriders, turn signals, plexiglass wind wings, a three-position soft top with landau bars, and separate decklids for the top and trunk.

The chrome wire wheels wear Kaiser-branded center caps, and they are mounted with American Classic whitewall tires. The Darrin frame and suspension were based on the contemporary Henry J, and the car features an independent front suspension and a live rear axle with leaf springs. A power-assisted steering system was installed during the 2000s refurbishment, and stopping power is provided by power-assisted ventilated discs at all four corners.

The seats, door panels, transmission tunnel, and dashboard are trimmed in yellow vinyl, while black carpets line the footwells. Features include cruise control, a padded dashboard, a cigar lighter, an ashtray, and a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and an AM/FM/CD stereo sourced from a late-model Chrysler vehicle is mounted below the dash.

The two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring, and it frames a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, fuel level, coolant temperature, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows under 37k miles, approximately 300 of which were added by the selling dealer. Total mileage is unknown.
